hier ein paar kurze statements von scott ritter, der in den neunzigern
ein unoteam im irak geleitet hat:
Iraq is no threat
Scott Ritter says that Saddam's weapons of mass destruction are largely
disarmed and that the "Iraqi threat" is built on a framework of lies. President
Bush, he says, has betrayed the American people.A former intelligence officer in the US marines and leader of the United
Nations Special Commission (Unscom) team in Iraq during the 90s, Scott Ritter
is well-qualified to comment. He talks to Simon about his views on Iraq at 2pm.He resigned from his post as chief of the team in 1998 because of disagreements
with the United States government. He said it was manipulating the process of
weapons inspections in order to justify getting rid of Saddam Hussein. He was
sceptical that Iraq was developing weapons of mass destruction at all.The US has branded Iraq part of an "axis of evil" supporting terrorism - and
President George W Bush has vowed to remove the Iraqi leader.Ritter believes UN weapons inspectors colluded with British secret service
agents to spread disinformation about Saddam Hussein's nuclear, biological and
chemical weapons programmes as part of a campaign to justify military strikes.Iraq: no longer a threat - why?
Scott Ritter gives the following reasons...
* Weapons of mass destruction
Iraq has no long term ballistic missiles - they have been disarmed. Production
facilities are destroyed.* Chemical weapons
In 1991 Iraq had one of the largest chemical weapons establishments outside the
US and Russia - it now no longer exists.* Other weapons
Any establishments that served a dual purpose, ie. could manufacture chemical,
nuclear or biological weapons, were subject to strict monitoring by weapons
inspectors prior to December 1998.Iraq has barred all inspectors from the country since the end of 1998.
