Ostliche Seite vom Waggon 2 schichten dickem teer drauf, verstaerkter Dach, versteckter notausgang.

"Two weeks," Bruce Beach estimates until the nuclear winter begins setting in around the globe.
But he's been guessing two weeks for the past 40 years.
Despite this dire prediction by her husband, Jean Beach is still considering which party she will vote for.
The aging couple live here on the main road in the small Ontario community of Horning's Mills -- half way between Orangeville and Collingwood. Off the highway and down a slight dip, the village, on this day, is covered in a postcard dose of non-radioactive white snow. You really wouldn't think residents here would have much to worry about.
And you wouldn't think this Santa-like man in his red suspenders, and his painter wife, in her green cardigan, would be the ones laying the groundwork for Armageddon.
For years now, Bruce, a retired computer science teacher, has been preparing for the end of the world. Or at least the surviving remnants of mankind. He's pessimistic about the state of the globe, but optimistic humanity will ultimately survive the approaching reckoning.
He doesn't come across as a crank. Just warm, thoughtful and, today, very cheery.
On farmland, away from this home, he built a 929-square-metre bunker dubbed Ark II. It's the largest privately constructed nuclear fallout shelter in North America.
Its core hive is 42 buried school buses, connected together.
They are covered with 2.4 metres of earth and a solid foot of concrete.
Inside the underground lifeboat, there's room for 400 survivors.
Though anyone -- other than recent thieves who used a cutting torch and patience -- would have a hard time getting in. Under demands by provincial officials, Bruce has had to keep the doors welded shut.
He now calls it Waco North, after the OPP showed up in large numbers last week, following the latest break-in.
There was a convoy of 11 emergency vehicles -- after Bruce called officials to report the break-in and ask whether he should just seal it up again. The OPP even assembled a special team to sweep the bunker, before it was closed up.
Bruce -- a guru of sorts to online survivalists looking to build their own shelter -- is an American, so he cannot vote in the federal election. Though, in truth, he hasn't voted on the U.S. side of the border for years.
We've really come here to talk to Jean -- the wife of a Doomsday profit -- to see if there's any reason to feel good about the future.
She is a well read and practical woman.
The first thing she has done, is hand me a two page synopsis on where she stands politically.
She is proud to fulfill her civic duty -- though makes it her policy never to speak in favor of one party or another. That, she says, is what her vote is for.
"I usually vote for the underdog," is all she will allow.
At 78 years old, she was born in this small place. Her own mom was born a short walk down the road.
The watercolour paintings of flowers Jean puts to canvass are as well known and perennial as memories of growing up here.
Jean will vote in the community hall, at which you can toss a snowball.
Each month, she meets with a women's group and a grassroots justice organization, to mull over Canadian issues.
There are so many great things about Canada, she will tell you -- many listed on the sheets she's now handed me.
"I am very grateful that we live here," she has written.
From our medical system to our decision not to go to war in Iraq, she is thankful for her country.
Though, she worries about long waits in emergency rooms and doctor shortages.
"Maybe because we are so close to Walkerton, we have also been more concerned about water issues than some," she admits on the first page.
This past summer, she and Bruce travelled to Wales, so he could make a presentation at Cardiff University. They arrived in the UK the very hour the transit bombs went off.
On television, last month, she watched the riots which took place in France -- and she worries about a different type of doomsday.
"When we look at the growing number of shootings taking place in Toronto, I wonder if maybe in another ten years, things will be the same way here as they are in France," she said.
If that sounds ominous, perhaps it should. In some ways, she shares the same belief as her husband -- prepare for a judgment day.
She even penned a line-by-line breakdown of the Book of Revelation, which is said to describe the end of the world and God's final defeat of Satan.
But she's not sticking to his two-week deadline.
She figures there's still time to vote.
The last line of her political manifesto is reserved for what she sees as one of Canada's greatest problems -- a loss of moral values by many of the leaders (whom she won't name).
"The whole system seems to have been terribly afflicted by the influence of money," she says -- or, rather, writes.
"It may have been that way in the past also, but I am only saying that it is going to be terrible if it is that way in the future."
But if things don't turn out well, they know they at least have a safe place to which they can run.
gruss... -Basey
