If a technology can be developed to economically recover oil from oil shale, the potential is tantalisingly enormous. If the containing organic material could be converted to oil, the quantities would be far beyond all known conventional oil reserves. Oil shale in great quantities exists worldwide: including in Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Estonia, France, Russia, Scotland, South Africa, Spain, Sweden and the USA. http://www.worldenergy.org/wec-geis/publications/reports/ser/shale/shale.asp
--and extraction by means of engineered bacteria:
http://www.cem.msu.edu/~cem181h/projects/97/petroleum/ceminteg.htm--And last August, they were talking about cranking up Oil Shale again because the price of oil was up to $40/bbl http://www.worldoil.com/Magazine/MAGAZINE_DETAIL.asp?ART_ID=2378
The oil shortage of the early 1970’s scared Wall Street and the government... Shale oil was viewed as a possible solution to energy independence in the U.S. The quantity of oil in these rocks is huge. It is estimated that oil shale deposits in Colorado contain more oil than all the conventional oil reserves in the world. The government, and virtually all the big oil companies, jumped into shale oil in a big way and spent many hundreds of millions of dollars. Soon, however, it became obvious that extracting oil from shale was totally uneconomic and all of the projects shut down before going into production – all except Union. The government contracted with Union Oil to go on into production on a test basis to determine actual costs as well as any other problems that might be unique to the overall process, including mining, extraction, transportation, waste disposal and reclamation. Union mined 10 million tons of shale, constructed an $800 million plant, and produced 5 million barrels of oil. The spent shale was deposited in a canyon and reclaimed at 2:1 south facing slopes.
