However, other reports yesterday said Syrian President Bashar Assad had made moves recently to improve ties with Syrian rival Iraq -- and Iraqi rival Iran -- in an attempt to form a military "coalition" of nations ready to oppose Israel in the event of war in the Mideast.

Earlier this week, Assad approved renewed air links between Damascus and Baghdad for the first time in 20 years, while President Saddam Hussein granted Iran permission to overfly Iraqi territory to deliver arms and ammunition to the Iranian-sponsored terrorist group, Hezbollah.

Meanwhile, Iraq has moved one of its scarce remaining armored divisions to its border with Syria -- not as a threat, "but to support Syrian troops in the event of war between Damascus and Israel," Newsline USA reported Friday.

And last year, amid no publicity, Iraq and Syria held joint military exercises for the first time in two decades.

Finally, "intelligence sources also said Bashar has given the go-ahead to his military chiefs to establish closer ties with Iraq’s military, in an effort to stage a coordinated response to Israel in the event of war with the Jewish state," said Newsline USA.
