The minor to major geomagnetic storm conditions which where predicted yesterday
Nov 10 will continue for the next few days. The Earth is under the influence of
a high (800 km/s) solar wind stream caused by a extremely large equatorial
coronal hole. The interplanetary magnetic field carried by the solar wind is
predominantly negative and allows for strong reconnection with the earth
magnetic field. This reconnection results in the disturbances measured by
Sec/NOAA giving a planetary k index of 5 and 6, and by the ground station
Izmiran giving a local k index of 5.
