Der frühe Wintereinbruch - jetzt auch hier - ist sehr ungewöhnlich. Bei euch kommt auch noch die Straßenglätte hinzu, hier im Süden bleibt es hoffentlich bei Schneematsch.

Early snowfall in central Sweden wreaks traffic havoc

STOCKHOLM (AFP) Oct 22, 2003

An unseasonally early blizzard and icy road conditions surprised motorists in central Sweden on Wednesday, causing dozens of traffic accidents but no major injuries, police said.
"The snow which fell overnight and early in the morning made the black ice which had formed treacherous for motorists", as the snowcover prevented the ice from melting, Stockholm police spokesman Mats Nyhlen told Swedish news agency TT.

"Fortunately there were no serious accidents," he added.

Cars in Sweden are required by law to have winter tires as of December 1, but the central part of the country has experienced wintry conditions unusually early this year and more in line with conditions typical of the far north.

Temperatures have since the start of the week hovered around freezing during the day, falling as low as minus 10 degrees Celsius (14 degrees Fahrenheit) at night.

In Soederhamn, some 300 kilometers (185 miles) north of Stockholm, 30 centimeters (12 inches) of snow were reported to have fallen by Wednesday.

The cold conditions are expected to continue for some time, the national meteorological institute said, issuing a warning for continued black ice.
