The senior US general in Iraq has warned of a more sophisticated enemy on the ground and the possibility of new "major terrorist attacks".
Attackers killed three American soldiers in separate bomb and gun attacks on Wednesday alone.
Baghdad city was troubled by violent scenes on Wednesday as a demonstration by unemployed men turned into a riot. A BBC correspondent who witnessed the riot in Baghdad says it shows that the situation in Baghdad remains extremely volatile, despite coalition claims that security is improving by the day.
Police fired in the air, as protesters threw rocks and set cars ablaze.
