Die USA sind zwar zu globaler Machtprojektion fähig, doch anscheinend fehlt ihnen die Fähigkeit oder der politische Wille, Stabilität und Ordnung zu schaffen.
May 7, 2003: The Taliban "offensive" is underway, with several hundred armed Taliban making attacks on foreign troops and government officials. There are also efforts to intimidate civilians, and close schools for girls and shops that sell music and videos. The attacks do not add up to a lot of activity, but there is enough of it for the general population to know the Taliban are still around. Taliban camps exist openly across the border in Pakistan, and Taliban recruit Pakistani Pushtuns for combat operations in Afghanistan. Pakistan has promised to crack down on the Taliban along the border, but this is difficult to do with so many hostile, and heavily armed, tribesmen protecting the Taliban operations.
May 6, 2003: Some 200 Italian mountain infantry (Alpini), took part in their first operation. American, Afghan and Italian troops went to the Pakistan border in southeast Afghanistan for Operation Unified Venture. No weapons or hostile fighters were found.
In the west, around Kandahar, Taliban fired on several demining vehicles. Nearly all the deminers are Afghan. There were several clashes with Taliban around Kandahar, and one Taliban leader was wounded and arrested. The Taliban are basically tribal fighters who believe the strict version of Islam enforced by the Taliban is still the way to rule Afghanistan. This fight over which tribe's customs shall be imposed on everyone is an ancient one in Afghanistan.
