Vor den Briten habe ich ohnehin jeden Respekt verloren.
After the end of the Second World War, German generals were hanged for having waged a war of aggression. The UN was founded to prevent such aggressions in the future. Now that those rules pose an obstacle to American and British foreign "policy", the UN and the will of the majority of its members are simply ignored. As regards its foreign policy, the UK still perceives itself as a great power. Continental Europeans generally share little sympathy for such nationalistic, pseudo-grand behaviour by a country which in other fields has fallen down to mediocre or low standards. The UK government had better tackle the problem of structural violence within British society (hooliganism, crime), improve the quality of education across the country and modernise the transport system and social services instead of waging a costly war of dubious legitimacy alongside the United States.
By participating in this campaign, the UK government undermines the unity of the EU and makes the masses of Sun-readers believe that their country is still a major force to be reckoned with on the international scene. However, Britain would never be able to fight Iraq alone nor would it have been able to topple Milosevic without US support. Britain must come to accept that the times of its empire are forever gone. No intervention with some frigates and a few troops can change this picture.
