Defence minister denies link between fleet's voyage and Iraq crisis
Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov has denied a link between the voyage of the Pacific and Black Sea fleets to the Indian Ocean and the Iraq crisis. "The vessels' voyage is in no way linked to current or future events around Iraq," Ivanov noted. "Our ships won't even sail into the Persian Gulf," he said. "Quite a large squadron of vessels will go" to the Indian Ocean. "A voyage of this scale has not been conducted since the USSR's collapse," he said."Unfortunately, many countries have forgotten how the [Russian Navy's] Andrei Flag looks." That will change now, he said. "As for my forecast of events in Iraq, we must do all we can to prevent a war," he said. "If a war breaks out for some reason, Russia will not participate in it, as we have reiterated on several occasions," he said. //Interfax
