U.S. carrier may be sent back to Gulf region

WASHINGTON, Dec 27 (Reuters) - The U.S. Defense Department
has placed the USS George Washington, a nuclear-powered
aircraft carrier, on alert for a possible return to the Gulf
region only days after it came back from a six-month
deployment, a U.S. official said on Friday.
The development came as the United States continues to
build up its forces in the Gulf region ahead of a possible war
against Iraq. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity,
said the redeployment of the George Washington could come with
96 hours notice.
The George Washington and its battle group returned to
Norfolk, Virginia, on Dec. 20 after a six-month deployment
during which its planes were used for operations in Afghanistan
and Iraq, among other things. The battle group included the
guided missile cruisers USS Normandy and USS Monterey and the
Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers USS Laboon and
USS Mahan.
The George Washington has an airwing of about 75 warplanes.
It was commissioned in 1992.
The USS Harry S. Truman, another aircraft carrier based in
Norfolk, and its battle group were deployed on Dec. 5 to the
Mediterranean Sea and Gulf to relieve the returning George
Washington.
The U.S. Second Fleet would not confirm a change in status
for the George Washington and its battle group.
"They're already in a status that if a contingency arises,
they're the guys who get called up," said Cmdr. Ernest
Duplessis, spokesman for the U.S. Second Fleet in Norfolk.
