(2002/11/12): "War on Iraq 'may be as early as December 8'"
US Secretary of State Colin Powell has warned military action against Iraq could start before the end of the year. The assault could be triggered as early as December 8, the deadline in the UN Security Council resolution for Saddam Hussein to account for any weapons of mass destruction.
Military strikes had not been expected to start until February, after weapons inspectors are due to report back to the UN, and when weather conditions would be better suited to desert war.
"We're not going to wait until February to see whether Iraq is cooperating or not," Mr Powell has told CNN.
"If I were Saddam Hussein, I would take it with a great deal of concern and seriousness and understand that this is not some idle threat that has been issued by the United States.
"This is not some resolution to be ignored, as he's ignored all previous resolutions."
George Bush is reported to have decided on a war plan that includes bombing strikes followed by up to 250,000 US and British soldiers if the UN resolution fails.
Iraq has until Friday to pledge to comply with the resolution, which was passed unanimously last Friday.
It must declare any prohibited weapons or the facilities to produce them by December 8 and UN weapons inspectors must resume their work by December 23, reporting back to the Security Council by February 21.
