MOSCOW (AP) - Russian special forces used sleeping gas in their Saturday pre-dawn raid on the theater where Chechen gunmen had held hostages for three days, state-controlled ORT television reported.

The kind of gas was not immediately known. Hospitals reported that many of the freed captives were unconscious or unable to walk when brought there by buses.
