Kometen-Update

Current magnitude: (June 12, 2001): 3.6.

Predicted Peak Magnitude: -1.6 to 3? (June 12, 2001). Based on new information
just released by astronomer Andrew Pearce on the JPL NASA page, the comet
appears to be undergoing another major outburst in magnitude. Brightening from
4.6 to 3.6 during the last 24 hours. Astronomers are continuing to monitor the
comet to see if the outbursts continue. Obviously, if the same thing happens
that occurred in May -- a brightening of five magnitudes over a period of six
days -- Comet Linear A2 could reach -1.6 magnitude by June 18 (two magnitudes
brighter than Saturn and about a half-magnitude less bright than the planet
Mars). This would make it a classic comet like 1997's Hale-Bopp.
