Kaliningrad by Ferry

MOSCOW (MT) -- A regular ferry service between St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad will be launched by the end of the year at a cost of $10 million, Deputy Transportation Minister Nikolai Negodov said Wednesday.

Work has already begun to upgrade the Baltiisk port in the Kaliningrad region and shorten the duration of the ferry ride between the cities, Negodov told Interfax.

The new service may provide a compromise solution in a dispute with the European Union over visas for the enclave's residents ahead of upcoming EU expansion, the deputy minister said.

Meanwhile, a group called For KÚnigsberg has started collecting signatures in Kaliningrad as part of a campaign to return the city's historical name.
