The following is a release by the United States Geological Survey, National Earthquake
Information Center: A major earthquake occurred NEAR THE NORTHEAST COAST OF
TAIWAN, about 65 miles (100 km) southeast of Taipei at 11:52 PM MST yesterday, Mar 30,
2002 (Mar 31 at 2:52 PM local time in Taiwan). A PRELIMINARY MAGNITUDE OF 7.1 WAS
COMPUTED FOR THIS EARTHQUAKE. The magnitude and location may be revised when
additional data and further analysis results are available. No reports of damage or casualties
have been received at this time; however, this earthquake may have caused damage due to
its location and size. This is the largest earthquake in this general area since a magnitude 7.8
