Guten Abend zusammen,

Auch findet jetzt in Iran “The Sixth South African-Iranian Bilateral Joint Economic Commission” statt.

The Tehran Times, Englische Ausgabe, lese.

Iran, EU Determined to Expand Relations

The eighth round of comprehensive talks between Iran and the European Union (EU) will be held in Spain today. The discussions began in 1998, and were mainly aimed at exchanging views on regional and international issues.

Through this exchange of views, the two sides intend to establish a stable framework for their bilateral relations.

This is why on November 19 last year, the European Commission approved a proposal for negotiations on cooperation with the Islamic Republic. Additionally, for the past four years, the two sides have formed several working groups in order to fight drug smuggling, and focus on issues such as refugees, energy and investments.

Iran-EU cooperation is necessary for several reasons. The European Union is Iran's major trading partner, and oil constitutes over 75 percent of the EU's imports from Iran, which can also meet a large percentage of the European demand for natural gas. The Islamic Republic is also interested in encouraging European investments in its domestic economy.

The European Union sees Iran's status and role in the Middle East, Central Asia and Caucasus as extremely important. Indeed, Iran acts as a bridge linking the East to the West.

Under the present circumstances, the issues of Afghanistan's reconstruction and efforts to find a solution to the Middle East conflict have made the significance of Iran-EU cooperation even more prominent. Iran and the EU have very similar views on the Middle East, since both sides oppose the biased U.S. approach to the situation.

Washington and the Zionist regime do not welcome the EU's role in finding a solution to the Mideast conflict, but Iran sees this role as vital because it may offset the U.S. bias towards the Zionist entity and counter the U.S.-backed Israeli suppression of innocent Palestinians.

Unlike the United States, the European Union has clearly shown that it has a realistic concept of relations with Iran. Furthermore, its prudent stance on Washington's hostility towards Tehran indicates its determination to expand relations with the Islamic Republic. Even on January 17, the EU rejected the Israeli request for termination of the union's cooperation with Tehran.

Presently, Iran-EU relations as a whole, in addition to Tehran's ties with each individual member state, are expanding. However, this does not mean that the two sides agree on everything and there are no outstanding issues between them. However, what is important is the willingness of both Iran and the European Union to try and resolve their differences and strengthen their ties based on mutual interests and respect.

Demagogic Tactics No Longer Effective

U.S. President George W. Bush, in his State of the Union address at the U.S. Congress on Tuesday night, once again accused the Islamic Republic of seeking weapons of mass destruction and supporting terrorism. In his irresponsible remarks, the U.S. president also claimed that in Iran, a minority that is not representative of people crushes the people's hopes of freedom!

These baseless remarks are not anything new, as they are quite in line with the hostile attitude Washington has held toward Tehran ever since the Islamic Revolution toppled the U.S. puppet in this country and brought an independent government to power. But there are also certain reasons for the increased harshness in Bush's remarks against Iran.

The fact is that although the U.S. forces have been trying for the past few months to capture Saudi-born dissident Osama bin Laden, who is considered by Washington to be the mastermind behind the September 11 incidents, they have so far failed to achieve this objective. Thus, to hide this failure, Bush needs to raise a commotion over what he claims are threats from independent countries like Iran or North Korea in order to divert U.S. public attention from the Bin Laden issue.

Besides, the incumbent president is trying to give an impetus to the U.S. military-industrial complex, which requires fomenting crises throughout the world. This is why Bush every now and then comes up with new allegations against the Islamic Republic. For instance, just a few weeks ago, he accused Tehran of interfering in Afghanistan and trying to undermine the Afghan interim government, a charge that was vehemently denied by the Afghan defense and foreign ministers, who praised Iran's great assistance and support of the Afghan nation for the past decades.

Above all, what seems to have particularly angered White House officials has been Iran's refusal to join the so-called anti-terror campaign led by the United States. Instead, Iranian officials stressed that any international fight against terrorism should be conducted under the auspices of the United Nations.

Last but not least, the new Republican Administration has not taken any effective steps toward solving certain domestic problems facing the American people, like the deepening economic recession. Rather, it has been allocating a great portion of public funds for military purposes. Now, to counter rising public objections and justify its militaristic policies, the U.S. president has to draw the attention of the American public to some imaginary foreign threats.

However, considering the present transparency, Bush is very unlikely to succeed in covering up his failures on both the domestic and international fronts by resorting to such cheap and demagogic tactics.
