The Sky Is Rising
Air pollution is responsible for inflating the lowest layer of the atmosphere by several hundred meters. Less than 25 years' worth of carbon dioxide and ozone belched out by cars and factories have been enough to alter the composition of the planet's skies. Scientists had noted a gradual expansion of the troposphere, located 9 to 18 kilometers high, since 1979.

When Ben Santer of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California and colleagues modeled the change on the computer, they found that ozone layer destruction by pollutants such as antifreeze will cool and shrink the atmospheric layer which lies above the troposphere. At the same time, extra carbon dioxide released by engines will warm and expand the troposphere.

The scientists determined that human-made changes in these two gas levels were probably responsible for the rise in troposphere boundary observed over the last 50 years. The work was reported in the journal Science.
