Widersprüche im System

Conclusion
The problems facing the world as we move into the 21st century are not to be found in a few seasons of poor economic statistics or of regrettable crime figures. Nor are they to be found in relative changes in the ranking of nations, superimposed on an overall pattern of progress. Instead, the true problems are to be found in the form of fundamental contradictions. These are sets of circumstances that cannot continue indefinitely yet that have no consistent solution within the constraints currently applying. This is the situation where we can see broadly where we would like to be; but we cannot get there from here.
If we were talking about one or two contradictions, we might perhaps be able to laugh them off. The problem is that we face numerous contradictions. They affect rich countries, poor countries, and countries in between. They are looking increasingly like a set of dominoes, lined up and ready to fall.
Furthermore, the above is only a cursory survey. In the following chapters we will see that there are contradictions within contradictions. They threaten political integration, economic organisation and social cohesion. It will be recalled that failure in any one of these can be tolerated so long as the others hold. But it no longer seems likely that we can rely on that.
