Amos Gilad: “No difference between Yasin and Arafat”
Senior Defense Ministry official tells foreign military reps: Arafat wants to break Israelis’ spirit.
“There’s no difference between Yasin and Arafat” said Major General (res.) Amos Gilad, head of the Diplomatic-Political Branch in the Ministry of Defense, yesterday (Tuesday).
Gilad was speaking to military representative from 40 countries at a conference on “Limited Conflict” in Tel Aviv. He continued, “Arafat recognizes Israel as a temporary entity. He believes in the strategy of using terror to break the spirit of Israeli citizens. In my opinion, Arafat was captivated by the way we left Lebanon. Therefore, he legitimizes the activities of terrorist organizations. We call the suicide bombers, ‘terrorists’ but 20 kilometers from here, they are heroes”.
Gilad also shared his prognosis for the future of the Palestinian Authority: “Hamas does not shy from any means to overthrow the PA and signs of that activity are already evident in the field. In believe that in the next decade, Arafat will retire, because of his age. No one will move against him because he would strike back like a snake. It’s a tragedy. Arafat lost his legitimacy among the Palestinians because of the damage that terror has done to their people”.
Yesterday at the same forum, Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Moshe Yaalon was asked if Arafat and Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah were also potential targets. He replied, “Based on their responses, they realize that it is getting closer to them”.
