AndreasEU works to end China arms ban
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/3515856.stm
“France has spearheaded the bid to lift the ban, arguing it is "anachronistic" given improved ties between China and the EU. The governments of Spain and the Netherlands have also voiced support for its lifting. EU foreign ministers discussed ending the embargo at a meeting in January and said a final decision could be made later this month at the next summit of EU national leaders. But earlier this month US Secretary of State Colin Powell appealed to the EU not to scrap the embargo because of China's human rights record.”
International Discohesion (between Europe and the US ) potentially promoting international disintegration. Arming the Barbarians. While the ageing European societies are in need of cash, China is struggling to build up modern fighting forces capable of confronting the US.You may be able to say something on the quality of China’s indigenous arms production?

China and France to conduct joint naval drills

The navies of China and France begin joint naval exercises on Tuesday off the northern Chinese coast in what Beijing says will be the "most comprehensive" military drills with a foreign power by a fleet under the command of the People's Liberation Army.Although they are being conducted some distance from Taiwan, the exercises will take place just days before sensitive presidential elections on the island, over which China claims sovereignty.France angered Taiwan recently by strongly condemning President Chen Shui-bian's plan to hold a referendum on missile defence alongside Saturday's election, prompting Taipei to suspend top-level ties with Paris. … "The French navy is experienced, and we are eager to learn from them about their experience in coordination skills in joint exercises," said Mr Ju.”
Interesting developments. Growing cohesion between Europe and China on the one hand, but, increasing evidence of discohesion among the nations of the “Northern-Atlantic” civilisation on the other. During the cold war, the US would have been able to prevent something like this from happening.
Hynix 'to invest $800m in China
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/3515422.stm
“Hynix is seeking new markets after the US and European Union put tariffs on its chips last year, accusing the company of receiving state subsidies. China's semiconductor market is estimated to be worth $30bn. Analysts say chips made in China could be exported to the US and Europe without being subject to the new tariffs.”
