Interesting dinner conversation this last weekend. My wife and I had dinner with our neighbors last Saturday evening. Their son who works for the CIA was in town and joined all of us for dinner. Well, after the usual pre-dinner chit-chat, we sat down at the dinner table and started to dig in. The dinner conversation was light as everyone talked about familes, who had gotten married, pregnant, or divorced. Eventually the talk gravitated over to world events and what was really going on with Lebanon and Israel, etc. At that point, our neighbor appeared to give his CIA son a telling look.
His son apparently took his dad's cue, and began to report the world news that most of the guests had already read in the newspaper about Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, and Iran. One of the dinner guests rather impatiently cut him off stating that he wanted to hear the son's unique perspective given the employer he worked for, not a re-gurgitation of already stale news.
After a pause, the son slowly picked up where he had left off, but then stopped (and after a deep sigh), said that things around the world were much worse than what was actually being reported in the papers. He said he couldn't say a lot, but reported that we only hear a small fraction of what is really going on. To seemingly emphasize his point, he communicated that by Labor Day he and his wife were moving all of their money, including retirment money, out of the US stock market. He said that while he wouldn't necessarily recommend the same thing for the dinner guests to do, things appeared dire enough to him, that he needed to take action to protect his family's financial future and retirement.
As you might guess, this put quite a pall over the rest of the conversation as the dinner guests were taken by the passion with which the son spoke. Well, dinner finally ended, and after some cleanup, we all left for our own homes. The revelation from the neigbor's son seemed to knock everybody off their feet, and they started to realize the gravity of the predicament that each of us now face.
